The cosmetic form of botulinum toxin often referred to by its product name BOTOX®, is a popular non-surgical injection that temporarily reduces or eliminates frown lines, forehead creases, crows feet near the eyes and thick bands in the neck. The toxin blocks the nerve impulses, temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles while giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance.

A combination of factors can cause facial lines. It’s not just about the cellular changes that may occur, or reduction of collagen, or damage caused by free radicals from the sun and the environment.

Repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting, or raising eyebrows cause skin to furrow and fold, gradually resulting in the formation of facial lines. BOTOX® Cosmetic works beneath the surface and temporarily reduces the underlying muscle activity that causes moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines in adults – to help them look visibly smoother.

Some patients receiving BOTOX® Cosmetic report the injections feel like a pinch. You may begin to notice a visible smoothing of frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines within 24 to 48 hours, with full results in 30 days lasting up to 4 months for moderate to severe frown lines.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is not a permanent treatment. If you discontinue treatment the moderate to severe frown lines, crow's feet and forehead lines will gradually return.

Dermal Fillers are injectable treatments that restore youthful volume and fullness to the face, plump deeper facial lines and folds and provide contour and definition to the face.

Over time, the effects of aging can take a toll on our appearance. Skin becomes thinner, loses its elasticity and is more prone to fine lines, wrinkles, creases and folds. Fortunately, it is possible today to restore a smoother, more youthful appearance with the use of dermal fillers, which are injected beneath the skin's surface to fill depressed areas.

JUVÉDERM® is a form of Hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar compound found in the body. This acid helps maintain skin volume by attracting and binding water, giving the skin a smooth, plump appearance. However, with time, UV exposure, and environmental factors, the hyaluronic acid in the skin diminishes and collagen breaks down causing fine lines and wrinkles to appear. Injectable hyaluronic acid can temporarily replace this compound, restoring the volume and firmness it has lost. It is widely being used for the management of wrinkles, fine lines, contour deformities and volume loss of the face, cheeks and lips associated with aging, developmental anomalies and certain diseases.

The results can last from 6 months up to two years depending on the area being treated and the product being used. They are especially effective for the nasolabial folds, lip augmentation and areas of contour deformity. They are also an ideal adjunct to Botox® and are frequently used in conjunction with Botox® to correct lines and creases that persist.

Is it painful?

We apply topical numbing cream to the injection areas prior to your session. This doesn’t completely alleviate the pain, as injections are made a little more deeply in the cheek area. Once the filler is injected, you’ll feel some pressure, but patients don’t describe it as any intense pain, just more of a sensation.

Do I need to plan for recovery time after using dermal fillers?

There isn’t any recovery necessary. Yes, you may have some redness and slight swelling at the injection sites, but that shouldn’t preclude you from going about your normal activities. Strenuous exercise should wait a day just to let the filler settle in.

The usual side effect in the under-eye area is redness at the injection sites. There can be some slight swelling but using a cold compress on and off for a couple hours usually helps alleviate this.

Also, if you don’t like the look of your injections, hyaluronic acid fillers can be instantly neutralized with the injection of an enzyme called hyaluronidase.

Before and After:

Dermal Fillers

If you are bothered by fine lines and wrinkles, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers may be right treatment for you. With age, many experience a depletion of collagen in the skin and consequently a loss of volume. Once youthful lips have lost their subtle shape or laugh lines have become increasingly noticeable. Dermal fillers restore the natural shape to these areas. The results are immediate and last up to six months.
